According to Amnesty International, a human rights organization that monitors capital punishment laws as part of its mission to end what it considers official abuses of basic human rights, 77 countries impose the death penalty for capital crimes, and those countries are mostly in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. The United States and Japan are the only industrialized countries that retain capital punishment, although Japan’s use of the death penalty is markedly less than that of the United States. In the last 30 years, over 118 countries abolished capital punishment. The most recent countries to do away with capital punishment are the Philippines in 2006, Armenia in 2003, and Cyprus in 2002. Among the 77 countries that retain the death penalty are China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, Pakistan, and the Russian Federation.
